Dr Deo de Wit was born and went to school in Sydney. He completed his medical degree in Cape Town, South Africa, followed by registrar training in pathology at Groote Schuur Hospital. He also completed a MD thesis, relating to molecular aspects of tuberculosis while training in Cape Town. Deo then moved to the UK where he did further Microbiology training at the Hammersmith Hospital in London and the Royal United in Bath. He returned to Australia in 1993 to take up a position as Staff Microbiologist at Gosford Hospital in NSW. He is currently the director of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and has published extensively in the scientific literature. He has a busy clinical infectious diseases practice and also maintains a keen interest in laboratory microbiology. His current interests are varied but he has a particular interest in influenza and bioterrorism.

He has recently published his first work of fiction, The Antarctic Code. This thriller follows three siblings across four continents as they track clues linking recent influenza pandemics to genetic engineering, bioterrorism and the Russian mafia.
